Portland boasts some wonderful Jewish resources that we are pleased to highlight here. This is by no means intended to be an exhaustive list, but should give you a flavor of what else is available Jewishly in the Portland area. The Levey Day School is a community Jewish day school for children ages pre-K through 5th grade. They offer outstanding secular and Jewish education for children. The school is housed at Temple Beth El at 400 Deering Avenue in Portland. The phone number is 207-774-7676.
There is finally a kosher restaurant in Portland. Little Lads Cafe and Bakery on Congress Street, near Monument Square has been certified by Rabbi Herzfeld.
Kosher food items--including meats and cheeses--can be found at Hannaford Bros., located at 295 Forest Avenue in Portland. Whole Foods also offers a variety of kosher products. The store is located at 127 Marginal Way. In addition, many other supermarkets in the area offer kosher items. We have started a list of kosher foods that are readily available that can be downloaded here.
The Jewish Community Alliance of Southern Maine is our Jewish federation. They run a wide variety of programs from Jewish Family Services, to the ever-popular Center Day Camp. Phone:772-1959.
